Lorraine and Wayne have been courting and promised to marry one day. As a gift to her, Wayne arranges a trip for a group of her cousins and friends along with the two of them to visit an amusement park across the state line in Pennsylvania. The trip is cut short by a tragic accident that leaves the travelers emotionally or physically traumatized and two of them dead. Wayne is left with a lifetime challenge when doctors amputate as a result of his injuries. He decides that he is no longer worthy or capable of being a husband and supporting a family so pushes Lorraine away. Others of her cousins move away to deal with their own emotional and practical needs after the traumatic experience. She has been best friends with her nearest cousins since their childhood and sorely misses her closest confidants when they leave the community. In one fell swoop she has lost those outside her immediate family who know her best and would understand the questions and doubts she is facing after Wayne calls off the wedding and tells her to move on. Can love win out over self dependence? Will Wayne realize that accepting help and support from his fiancée allows her to show her love for him rather than that letting her go is the only reasonable way to deal with his changed circumstance?
Read Wanda’s latest Amish romance and see how a test of love is graded for these characters. This being the first in a series, I am now curious as to the stories of the other cousins Brunstetter introduced in this book. (ISBN# 9781602600607, 288pp, $10.97)
